Why Are Women Prone More to Eye Health Problems?
Eye disorders are often ignored by their owners nowadays. In fact, there are many eye disorders that cannot be overcome by glasses, treatment or surgery, you know.
Visual impairment can basically be experienced by anyone, both women and men. However, the fact is that according to research in the United States, women are more at risk of developing eye health disorders or eye diseases. Why is that?
There are several reasons why women are more prone to eye disorders:
- Women's life expectancy is longer than men's, so they are more likely to suffer from eye diseases due to aging factors, such as cataracts or glaucoma.
- Some eye disorders are more common among women, for example dry eye syndrome triggered by the use of contraceptive pills and menopause. Dry eyes can also occur due to side effects of lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
- Hormonal fluctuations also have an effect on the occurrence of eye disorders.
Meanwhile, women are also more prone to developing optic neuritis problems. Where most of these cases are experienced by women with an age range between 20-40 years. This is a health problem that affects the eyes, and the main symptom is the vision problems.
As for the symptoms that appear as a sign of the occurrence of optic neuritis, such as:
- Decreased vision
- Difficulty to distinguish colors, as well as feeling that each color becomes not as clear as usual.
- Vision becomes blurred, especially when body temperature rises such as after a hot shower or finished exercising.
- Can't see with one eye.
- Abnormal pupil reaction at the moment of exposure to bright light.
